Hello! I’m new to keeping plants.

My Mexican Snowball (that’s what I think it is at least) has a few sprouts!!

Do I do something about this or just let it keep growing like this?

I think this plant is outgrowing its planter so I can repot it. Any recommendations on what size pot to put it in?

Thanks for any advice!

The rule to follow when repotting is the new pot should be 2 inches bigger but he looks like he’s doing very well! You can leave him if you want

The root ball is usually very small compared to the plant for echiveria, and the sprouts look like flower bracts! You can propagate them but I usually find them to have less success than the actual leaves. I don't think they slow growth though so do whatever you want with them lol

The tallest sprout you’ve got there is actually the echeveria working on a flower, so I wouldn’t propagate or separate that from the plant. As for the other sprouts, you can carefully twist them off once they get so big that they start crowding the space for the main plant, but for now I’d hold off on removing anything until the new shoots are more developed.

As for repotting, lots of succulents like being in a more snug pot, but if it’s never been repotted or given new soil, you can gently remove some of the outer layers of the soil and replace it with some fresh soil to give your echeveria more nutrients to work with. Like the previous commenter said, you don’t want to repot it in anything more than 1-2 inches bigger than the root ball, or general size of all the roots combined (not including the soil). As long as the pot has drainage holes and isn’t digging into the base of the plant or anything, you can probably repot it with the same pot if you’re just looking for a soil refresh.

I swear by Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Mix for all of my succulents, and it runs for about $7-9 where I live, if you’re looking for a soil recommendation. As for any brands to avoid, I’d personally avoid Miracle Grow anything for this plant, even their succulent soil, especially if you live in a more humid climate in the warmer months as it can often not be well draining enough for plants, especially for succulents that need very well draining soil that dries out easily to prevent overwatering and root rot. Hope this helps! You’ve got a gorgeous echeveria on your hands, so keep up the good work! 👍

Is it still in the original nursery pot? If so, I would repot very soon. The nursery soil is not good for long term. But still doing ok cause it’s putting out flowers. Pic of the flower.
