Help w/boobie cactus.

Can anyone tell me what’s going on here? The cactus was moved gradually from inside to outside and I noticed a change in color in the upper part of the cactus. I water it when the soil is completely dry and move into the sun maybe once or twice a week but it’s on my porch with minimal sun hitting it majority of the time.

To me, it looks sunburnt on those brown spots. Unfortunately the brown spots are here to stay, but the cactus will recover. I’d suggest moving it to a shadier spot (but plenty of light still) until you feel it has stabilized, should only need 3-7 days. You can also find “shade cloths” online, they can work well if you don’t have the option to move it to a shadier spot.

As for the top half being a different shade, looks to be Epicuticular wax or Farina. A lot of succulents and cacti alike produce it. Think of it as a natural sunscreen for the plant. It does easily rub off though, so I’d avoid touching your cactus as much as possible.

I’ll add, if you notice the brown continue after moving to a shadier spot then it’s likely a fungal infection. In that case, I’d recommend getting some garden phos. You can either do a systemic root drench or the easier foliar spray method. Make sure to do these in the evening, cacti open their stomata at night

Thank you so much! I will definitely try to keep it out of direct sun light in hopes it recuperates.
