I recently got my 30 year old jade plant repotted, and the man who repotted it for me cut some of the leaves for me to make props out of. They’re currently in a small pot with drainage (as seen below) Any tips on propagating jade plants? I’ve tried before, but have had no luck with jades while what I usually do to propagate works just fine my other succulents. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

These stem cuttings usually propagate pretty well. Just keep in mind that they can’t absorb water since they have no roots yet. So make sure they have plenty of air flow to dry up the dirt. I put mine in front of a fan or on my porch out of direct sunlight. They need some moisture to stimulate root growth but will rot if they stay wet too long. I have rooted things like this in rocks when I really wanted to make sure they dried out well. Academe would work too if you have it. If it has to stay indoors with not much airflow, those suggestions might be necessary. Otherwise, cactus soil, with a little water dripped near the stem to get all of it wet and then placed where the dirt will dry out in a few hours should work great. The lighting isn’t as important at this point. Maybe water once a week. It might shrivel a little while growing roots, that’s ok.😊 It will perk back up once it grows roots and can absorb water. Your main goal is to make sure it doesn’t rot while it can’t absorb water. Otherwise, they are low maintenance even as cuttings. You got this!❤️

I know this plant means a lot to you so a little more encouragement!🥰

Here are two jade “ogre ears” that I propagated recently. They were both cut off of a big plant at the same time. This one was potted up like normal after sitting for a couple days to callous over. I water it about once a week.

This one sat for 2 weeks in the garage callousing over while I tried to figure out how to pot the curled cuttings. I finally settled on rocks to hold it down and am now pouring water over every day or two to stimulate root growth.

There’s not one right way. There’s just a lot of good options!😊

Oh wow! And thank you! Very sweet of you to remember too! I’m happy to report my jade survived its repotting. The nursery that did it for me was really sweet about it, and took it so seriously the lady at the repotting counter grabbed a walkie talkie and a bunch of other people rushed in because she said this was a “serious case”. I was worried there was something really wrong with Aslan 😂 turns out he was fine, she just wanted to make sure they had their head guy on it because Aslan’s so old.

I would say the number 1 success factor for Jade cuttings is bright sunlight. I lost my mother jade to stem rot after 15 years - but managed to grow 8 offspring from her cuttings and they are going great guns. They are in a south facing windowsill that gets full sun all day. As soon as I moved house and put them in the sun, they were like a new plant and have almost doubled in size.

Thanks for the tip! I have the new ones next to the original jade on my south window
