# just bought my very fist plant from trader joe’s, i was told to water…

just bought my very fist plant from trader joe’s, i was told to water it until water comes out of the drainage hole, i looked at the bottom and there are no drainage holes! should i repot it in a pot with holes at the bottom ?

Definitely. If you want to, you could probably try drilling holes in the bottom of that one or potting it in something that fits inside that pot.

thank you! how do i know when it is time to repot it ? does it look too small for this pot ?

You won’t know until you pull it out. You have to go by the root size. They don’t mind being a little snug. It should be in a pot that its roots can reach the bottom so it can suck up all the water. If this pot turns out to be the right size pot, and you want to keep using it, you have options. You can either make a hole in this one or put it in a pot with holes that fits inside it. Then you pull that pot out to water it, and put it back when it’s done dripping.

I’d get it into something with drainage ASAP regardless of the size of the plant.

I do half strength cactus fertilizer by espoma. It has myochorrizae inoculant in it but I’m not sure how effective that is for soil that’s supposed to dry between waterings? For cacti you want a lower NPK number, like 3-3-3 or 2-2-1… ideally in the single digits.
