# Help! I bought these 4inch monkey tail cactus cuttings and potted…

_Publicado por MJ el 2024-01-22_

Help! I bought these 4inch monkey tail cactus cuttings and potted them using cactus/succulent soil and my glazed ceramic pot does have a draining hole on the side.. only one remains green and firm. Three days ago I got a very inexpensive plant light because my house is chilly and does not get a lot of sun (there is a sunlight setting and a UV setting and it’s been mostly just on sunlight). Anything else I can do? I’m not sure if the others getting soft and wimpy is because they need more water as they get rooted or if they’ve received too much water? I feel like I have watered spaced out and small amounts at a time.

It does not appear your soil has any drainage added such as perlite or pumice. I would guess the ones that look unhealthy did not successfully root if they came without roots. Checking for roots and adding more drainage to your soil is where to start.

the soil looks too dense for cacti, and combined with the glazed ceramic pot i’m guessing the soil stayed wet far too long. cacti need a very well draining mix (at least 60% grit like perlite or pumice) and at least a few days bone dry before watering again. cuttings without roots are very prone to rot which i think is what happened to 4/5 of your little cacti. check the last one for roots and replant in something with lots of drainage. i’d recommend using the smallest pot possible, ideally a plastic nursery pot or terracotta so it doesn’t hold too much moisture in the soil

Thanks a bunch to all three of you!
