# I got this succulent a few weeks ago and repotted it, and now I’m…

_Lagt ut av Tyler den 2023-12-31_

I got this succulent a few weeks ago and repotted it, and now I’m concerned, it had leaves falling off and they became brown and gummy like, and I believe it is etiolating. It is not right next to the window but it is a few feet away and I’m wondering if I should get a grow light to provide more light or LEDs or something.

Can you see how the space between the nodes are getting longer in each picture? Is a sign that it is reaching for more light. So yes. Your are right. Give it more light

Ok thought so, I am not able to move it closer to a window, but should I get a grow light for it?

Also should I be concerned about the leaves that have been falling off, is that because of the lack of light aswell or another problem?

I think that nit having enough light meant the plant could not absorb the water you were giving it. Increasing the like means it will dry quicker and therefore not rot the leaves. Just make sure your pot has drainage holes and drains quickly.

If putting outside or directly in a bright window is out of the question, an led bulb with full spectrum lighting will help it not stretch as much. It will never shrink back down, but you could carefully behead it when you notice it gets healthier and then start over with a more compact cutting. Hope this helps!

Hey thanks for the advice, I have a few questions though, should I have the light on even if the plants are getting other light, and should I have it on for how long (the same as the day light where I am?), and when It comes to beheading, how far down to I behead (like to the very bottom?).

Succulents will never get all the sunlight they need if indoors. To counter act that, grow lights should be on them for about 10-12 solid hours a day. 10 minimum. Keep the bulb close to the plant, like 6 inches away.

Behead with a clean, sharp tool about 1.5-2 inches down. Then you wait for the wound on the cutting to callous over so it’s sealed, which should only take a week maximum. Afterwards, you can plant it a few centimeters down into the soil and water like normal. Stretched out as it is, it seems pretty healthy, so propagating the cutting should be very likely to succeed. Hope this info helps!

Ok thank you so much, would you suggest replacing the old succulent if propagating is successful or just keep both?

I’d always recommend keeping the original, as it’s good rootstock if nothing else. As it grows you can continually take more cuttings.

You need to watch LizK on YouTube! She’s amazing and the expert on succulents. I learned so much from her 😊
