# Got this cactus around a year ago and it did fine up until a few…

_Pubblicato da micah w il 2023-09-21_

Got this cactus around a year ago and it did fine up until a few months ago- anybody know what the issue is (or what type of cactus it is, since it came unlabeled)? I suspect it's some form of root rot or overwatering, but I removed all of its rotting roots and changed its soil two months ago and the issue persisted. I have also tried not watering it for longer periods of time- no change. I suck at cacti/succulents, so I would appreciate if anybody could help out! :)

I am not exactly sure but it reminds me of a balloon cacti?

It sounds like you did the right thing. Cactus grow so slowly that you may not see noticeable improvements anytime soon. But if it doesn’t continue to decline, i would assume a provisional success and watch for any signs of rot progression.

You might assess the environment you have it in. Something other than moisture might be contributing to the yellowing.

I also think it speaks volumes it’s sister-neighbor looks fine. Has it grown since you got it? Did it improve after repotting? Have you had any problems with it?

The rot has not progressed any further since my removal of the rotting/damaged sections, so hopefully you're right about the slow improvements. I get nervous with this cactus since the rotting has persisted for so long, but maybe the issue is already resolved.
Do you think cold temperatures contributed to the damage? I cannot think of any other issues in the environment that might be the cause, and my room gets in the low 60s at night.
To answer your other questions- it hasn't grown noticeably since I got it, but it was originally in a much smaller plastic pot that forced the buds to be crushed together(I switched in fear of root binding). Maybe it preferred less room.
On another note, do you prefer any specific fungicides? If it is fungal rot, I'd be curious to know if certain brands are better for dealing with it.

In most instances, 60 isn’t a problem. It sounds like it is probably recovering from the rot and adjusting to the larger pot.

I haven’t worked with fungicides so I can’t really recommend anything. You might see if anyone at a local nursery has experience with cacti.

As far as ID, Echinopsis huascha var. grandiflora (aka Trichocereus grandiflorus).

In Planta, I have mine listed under the common name Red Torch.

I looked it up and it looks pretty similar, but mine has never bloomed. What conditions do you usually keep yours in?
