# I have this lil elephant bush in a pot, but I'm very new to this and…

_Gepostet von Bethany am 2023-08-21_

I have this lil elephant bush in a pot, but I'm very new to this and I repotted it in this ceramic pot and I think I did it wrong cause the pot is a bit tall. Like, the soil line (is that a term?) where the soil ends and the plant stems start is about 1 inch below the top of the pot.

This wasn't really a problem until now when Planta told me to fertilize the plant. It instructs me to avoid getting the solution onto any of the stems and leaves - and I don't see how this is going to be possible. Any suggestions? Should I add more soil and try to repot it?

It’s okay to be a bit below the top of the pot! Just be careful with the fertilizer by using a dropper or a small watering can/container.

Be really careful and don’t water or water/fertilize unless it’s bone dry. It looks like this pit doesn’t have drainage and I’ve killed many succulents by accidental overwatering.

It has drainage ☺️ but thanks for the heads up - it wasn't dry yet when I checked so I didn't fertilize just yet and snoozed the notification from Planta

So if the top layer of soil is dry, would that be dry enough?

I usually wait till my jade is really dry. I’m in oregon and so it might be more important for me than if you live in a warmer climate. Generally though, overwatering is death to jade and succulents. 🧡🪴

I use a funnel to fertilize some of my plants when trying to avoid getting it on the leaves (like African Violet). And like previously stated make sure there is good drainage.

Perfect! I have a lil mini funnel for this old school lamp I have. I happen to be super, extra broke at the moment so unfortunately I can't even afford a $3 watering can

Watering cans with long, thin and curved/rounded spouts are perfect for this purpose. Shouldn’t be very expensive either.
