# Hi plant people! This is a Venus flytrap named Seymour that I’ve had…

_Posted by Grace on 2024-05-22_

Hi plant people! This is a Venus flytrap named Seymour that I’ve had for like two years now. Last summer he died off completely but the bulb grew new traps. Since then he hasn’t been growing large traps or has been growing leaves with tiny buds where the trap would be, and has had browning on the edges. He gets enough light, is watered with distilled water, and was recently moved to a sphagnum/perlite mix that is more appropriate for his needs, but I haven’t seen any improvement.

Could someone tell me what might be going on with him and what to try to help?

He just needs more light! Simple! VFT are outdoor plants so with the new warm weather I recommend putting him outside
PS Looovvee the name! Little Shop of Horrors is the best

I thought that too so I’ve had him out for a few days now, but then it seems like he got a little crispy… I’m like LET ME HELP YOU
and thank you!! Yes it is!

If it’s getting too crispy outside, you could try tenting it with a plastic bag to help retain its humidity. Just keep an eye on it.

I don’t have VFT, but I do have several pinguiculas, a cape sundew, and pitcher plants, so take this with a grain of salt. I believe Venus fly traps are a bog plant, so the sphagnum moss and pearlite is perfect for it, but I believe it should also be sitting in a tray of water.

Ooh I’ll definitely put them in trays! Thank you!

Did you give him his correct dormant period in the last two years?

#### Grace replied on 2024-06-02

I didn’t 🤦🏼‍♀️ I left him kinda to do his own dormant period but didn’t do it properly

That’s totally okay dude! It happens

Such a coincidence! I have a VFT named Seymour too! My plant was also getting a little brown on the edges. I pulled off all the brown traps and put him outside for the summer. They love to sit in water as you probably already know.

The best name for a VFT!! This is what I’ve been doing and he’s peeking up significantly!

Good! I’m glad to hear it!

I live near the Carolina coast so mine live outside year round and they love it. They were frozen stiff a couple times but because they were dormant it didn’t hurt them.
Try acclimating them a little slower with 2 hours at first and see if it helps with the browning.

Wonderful, thank you so much!!
