I’m thinking of getting a Venus flytrap as my entrance to the carnivorous side of plants. Is there anything I should know before hand? I know they’re sensitive to unfiltered water and need tons of humidity and light. Anything helps!

MHO- I'd start with Nepenthes as an intro to carnivorous. Similar care, distilled or rain water, lighting, humidity...no dormancy... a little less complicated from what I've gathered. And they are super cool plants!

Ok! Will look into it (although I may still take the risk of getting a Venus flytrap just because the look so cool)

I want 1 (or a dozen) myself...I haven't ventured into them quite yet. They are on my wishlist though!😁

Yeah, I mean who doesn’t want a plant that literally digests live things in its spiky mouth.

Check out Sarracenia Northwest. They offer TONS of priceless info.

Awesome, I will check them out. I have a plant store near me but it’s really expensive so…

I know the other person recommended a nepenthes, but sundews are another great starter option! Cape sundews and many others are extremely hardy and also beautiful. I personally started off with sundews so I’m biased.

Will look into those too!

How large do they get?

#### Ryan replied on 2025-04-10

It depends off of species but they don’t get too big. This is the one that started me with carnivorous plants and I’ve had it for a couple years.

They are super cool too!! They're on my wishlist as well. I'm in Vernont, so I've been waiting until it's a little warmer for the shipping

Wow, I can’t tell if it’s adorable or terrifying

This is my Alata...I've had her about 6 months

Wow. The leaves look awesome. And I’ve never seen pitchers that pink.

### Mel commented on 2025-04-10

I've seen some pretty large ones.

### Melikeplants commented on 2025-04-10

Yeah planta says up to like, 10 feet (the plant not the pitcher) but I don’t know how realistic that is.

#### Ryan replied on 2025-04-10

Nepenthes can do that for sure, you just need a big greenhouse which is… not accessible to most people to say the least…

#### Melikeplants replied on 2025-04-10

Yeah, I wonder how expensive it would cost to build one. Assuming you had the funding (which I know I don’t) it would be a fun project.

#### Ryan replied on 2025-04-10

I remembered a guy on instagram I follow @bakedout333 built his own little greenhouse for cheap and he grows a lot of nepenthes in there. I kinda forgot about him when I commented tbh but it doesn’t seem like it’s too hard to do.

Cool!

I bought a package of 3 different. Alata, Rebecca Soper, and Gaya. The Alata seems to grow faster and larger.

#### Melikeplants replied on 2025-04-10

Cool! How many bugs does it eat?

### Mel commented on 2025-04-10

Haha..not sure...when I find any, I drop them into the pitchers...

#### Melikeplants replied on 2025-04-10

Yeah, I live in an area with lots of mosquitoes so I wonder if it would help keep the ones that make it inside at bay?
