Hi everyone! I grabbed this SOP the other day and would love to help it grow more full on top.

Seeking any advice to help it thrive! 💚

I can definitely help! I took mine from two 2” pots to a relatively full 8.5” earlier this year (until my dog knocked it off the shelf, RIP). I also did an experiment where I tried different prop methods for 2 months to see what was fastest.

These guys prop very easily in water, but transitioning them from the water back into the main pot tends to be a lot less successful.

Here are the steps I like to follow:

1\. Take a shallow container without drainage. Deli containers are great for this, or you can get a clear plastic plant saucer at most hardware stores for about 50 cents.

2\. Lay down about an inch of perlite.

3\. Take cuttings of 2-3 pearls and nestle into the perlite so the stem faces down and the pearls are sitting on top.

4\. Add a very light layer of potting mix over top. Maybe 1/4”. It’s okay if it is on top of the pearls.

5\. Use tap water on a low setting to “rain” over the container to moisten the substrate. This will rinse most of the potting mix off of the pearls while still keeping their stems a little more covered.

6\. Cover with plastic wrap, close the container lid partially, or do the old trick where you stick the whole thing in a big ziploc. Crucially, DO NOT seal it all the way. It is enough for the props to be in an open ziploc or to have the plastic wrap sitting lightly over the top of the container rather than wrapped tightly. Alternatively, you can wrap tightly and then poke some holes. We want to keep humidity in, but we also want it to “breathe.”

7\. Stick someplace warm with medium light and check on it every week or so. If you don’t see condensation then do another “rain” over the top of the container. You should see roots within a couple weeks.

Gonna add another comment with how I transition back into the original pot for best success.

I like to transfer back to the original pot when roots are roughly 1/2” long, though it’s fine if they’re longer. Too long and they can get a little harder to situate, so ideally not over 1.5”.

1-2 days before the transfer, water the mother plant and give the props another “rain.”

When it’s time to transfer, go ahead and check your props. If you have roots for each pearl then you can snip the stem between them before planting back in the main pot. This makes it a little easier. If only one of the pearls rooted then go ahead and leave as a string.

Using a pencil or chopstick, poke a hole wherever you want your prop to be. Nestle the roots in the hole and then move the soil around it. Repeat for all your props.

Importantly, you’re then going to cover the whole top of the pot lightly with plastic wrap, so it’s just sitting on top. Put in bright light and leave the plastic wrap on until you see new pearls coming off most of your props.

This is a higher-effort approach than the old one of just coiling the strands over the dirt, but it will also fill in the pot WAY faster. Like, by many months.

When I tested different predictors of rooting speed and propagation success, heat was by far the strongest determinant of rooting speed. Setting it on a heat mat, keeping under a warm lamp, etc will make the biggest difference. It also seems to be better to avoid really bright light while they’re first rooting, but once they’re back in the main pot they will grow bigger and faster with bright light.

If you want to speed things up even more, you can sprinkle a light dusting of rooting powder right before you add the potting mix to the initial prop. Prop drops also seemed to help either rooting but also very clearly promoted fungal growth, so I would avoid in this case.

Hope this all helps!

Thank you so so much for the detailed and thoughtful response! I appreciate the advice— hopefully I’ll be able to post a success update in the near future 😆
