# Does anyone know what this weird sap is, coming from my vein plant?…

_Posted by Liv on 2025-09-04_

Does anyone know what this weird sap is, coming from my vein plant? It’s sticky and only coming from this one offshoot… I wiped some off of one leaf to get a closer look at the pore, and I don’t see any signs of pests. Any ideas are much appreciated!

It’s normal. It’s called guttation. The expelling of excess water.

Maybe I should be more specific by saying it’s normal for a nerve plant. Some plants do it on a regular basis. I have some alocasias that drip water on the floor.

Maybe you can answer a question for me. I had a nerve plant for a long time. It had the partially curved leaves like yours and the leaves always felt like thick paper. Do you have an explanation for the leaf curling? I could not find a definitive answer online.

Those are normal. Most of my nerve plant leaves curl inwards a bit, and the papery texture is something they're known for

Thank you! Because it bugged me for the entire time I had it. At the time there wasn’t any mention of it online, but that was over a year ago.

Thank you so much! The papery leaves bug me too, but the plant seems happy so I figured it was normal. After doing some reading I think I’m going to repot her, seems she may be feeling squished :(

I am under the impression it needs extra humidity, not sure if I made it up- I notice less curling when I mist my nerve plant consistently- and I live in a pretty humid place!

This is my Juanita with high humidity in Florida. Still papery but less curly with consistent misting.

Interesting 🤔 never heard of vein plants before I see why they’re called that though 😄

I notice you said vein plant-this is a nerve plant.
I believe the plant could be saying two different things. I’m not sure how long you’ve had the plant but I hope it was placed in isolation.

Keep an eye on that white spot you posted on the leaf, to me this looks like it’s a pest (mealy) and the leaves around it that are dying maybe under attack. If you can , send a close up of the plant with the flash on to see it a bit better.
Apart from that, one day I woke up and my nerve plant looked as if it deflated like a balloon. I was heart broken because it happened in the span of a day (I will post a picture). When I inspected it, I noticed my soil was actually very very dry. So I gave it a bit of water and in about an hour he perked up again.
This plant does this a lot, it’s called the dramatic droop. You can actually YouTube a shorts video and see it in action when you water it (very cool).

Just to give you an idea on my watering schedule (Canada/dry):
Distilled water
Bottom watered once a week in the summer and once every two weeks in the winter.
Sprayed every 2-3 days in the summer and every 4-5 days in the winter.

The dying leaves are the old ones from when I forgot to water it awhile back. Those are the only ones that didn’t fully die so I just left them. I’ve had the plant for months, it’s next to others and I only use soilless mixes, so there’s no issue of pests other than some fungus gnats here and there. If you’re talking about the little white hairs on the leaf, it’s on all of them and don’t wipe off or move around - I got concerned as well, but the plant is super healthy considering all of its leaves are new in the last couple months.
I will say, with her new leaves she is nowhere near as dramatic as she used to be, so I don’t need to worry about watering every other day anymore.
