I have a big self-watering pot (the kind with a reservoir below). My last plant didn't make it in there, but it may have been for other reasons. Any tips on using them?

Were the roots long enough to reach the bottom of the planter?

I just potted this new plants, root ball is a few inches from the bottom. Not sure about the last one, it was years ago!

let the reservoir stay dry for a while between waterings so your soil isn’t constantly soggy and this will prevent any overwatering symptoms, gnats, and root rot. depending on the species you have potted in this type of pot, you can wait for the soil to dry totally in between reservoir fills.

Thank you! Very helpful. It's a palm.

yeah for most palms you’ll want the soil to dry out completely between waterings, they are quite drought resistant
