What type of perlite do you use? I have just been buying the bags from the garden center with the small perlite. I have read that chunky perlite is better. Any opinions?

Define chunky?!? I’ve only ever seen 2 types, basically powder/sand size, and then smaller pebble size. I use pebble sized, if its SUPER fine its not really going to work the way you want it to.

Depends what you’re using it for. The chunkier the mix, the more air you’ll get in the soil but the more often you’ll have to water. So I would only use a bigger size perlite for a plant that absolutely WILL NOT tolerate the slightest wetness near the roots - maybe a very fleshy succulent?

When I say chunky I mean pebble size. I have been using the very fine perlite but i don’t think it’s giving me the drainage I need. I just ordered some pebble size from Amazon. See how that works! Thanks for the feedback!!

I have the regular size but prefer the chunky sizes 3 and 4 perlite. It is bigger and creates better drainage. Yes I’ll have to water a little more often but I don’t want root rot either. I mix my own soil in accordance with the type of plant I’m repotting so that makes a difference too. I’m still learning.
