# Hi all, A month ago I purchased a banana tree. I placed about 1 meter…

_Geplaatst door Davide op 2024-08-22_

Hi all,

A month ago I purchased a banana tree. I placed about 1 meter away from the window (facing South West and it recieves light for the majority of the day ) and it was initially thriving (generating 1 new leave every week).
After 2 weeks the growth has stopped and now leaves are turning yellow.
I ran a diagnosis via Planta App, it seems the problem is due to overwatering.
I'm quite a beginner at plants, can anyone confirm this is the case and there is anything I could do to save it?

Too much water can cause this as well as inadequate light (or even too much). My first recommendation is to invest in a hydrometer so you know what your moisture levels are without having to guess. Planta is a good “guide” but in my experience it can recommend watering too often. I have a bird of paradise that it would have me water every 6-7 days. They like to be moist but not soaking wet and due to daily misting and high humidity in my area it actually needs to be watered once every 15 days or so. A hydrometer will take a lot of the guess work out of knowing what your plants need.

Also, you mentioned your plant is a meter from the window but don’t indicate directionality. Can you give us a better idea how much light it is getting? A north facing window no matter how close won’t be enough light for a tropical plant but a south or western facing window without any light filtering might be too harsh.

Hi Heather,
thanks for taking the time to reply.

The window faces Southport-West so the plant receives light for the majority of the day. I am in London so I don't feel the sun here can be too intense.
I just ordered soil moisture sensors, is it there a chart that tells what is the ideal moisture % for each type of plant?

Davide,

Tropical can be temperamental especially in climate’s like London. I agree that where you have it placed is most likely best for your given locale. As far as watering goes I would water when your meter hits the area between moist and dry.

One thing to remember about hydrometers is you want to give them a chance to accurately reflect the moisture. Mine can take a minute or two to give an accurate reading as when first placed can tell me my reading is wet (8) but 60 seconds later would show it only moist (4) and nearly in need of watering.

I attached a photo of my hydrometer giving me a reading on my bird of paradise plant and this is the exact reading I look for before giving it more water. Tropical may need higher levels of moisture in summer than other times. I believe that Planta has a good water chart that should show water frequency needs based on time of year. But again, that is a guideline and it takes longer for the soil to dry in winter than summer so I would trust the hydrometer.
