Do they like to have compact roots?

No plant likes to be root bound, but you don’t want to have too much empty space in the pot

Yellow leaves also? Seeing the yellow leaves, and the curling, best guess is overwatering. Low humidity also causes leaf curling.

Curling leaves can be caused by a lot of things. Over-watering, underwatering, unappealing temperatures, humidity issues it's a basic defense mechanism of the plant.
