(Pls help)question about self watering

So I bought a china doll plant from Lowe’s and it’s self watering with a string. (I’m very new to plants) so for now I made a setup where the string dangles in a few inches of water but the whole string isn’t covered. anyways, the top of the soil is very wet already but the plant looks healthy, I just feel like it’s way overwatered and I feel like I’m gonna mess up the “self watering” thing. Is there any specifics I’m missing? Is the soil supposed to be this wet when self watering? Do I always keep the string in water? ATP I just wanna repot it and water it normally unless anyone can give me advice😪

I always repot them because I’ve barely gotten regular watering down and am not up for a new method.

Recently, I’ve found death plugs (balls of cloth/plastic) wrapped around the roots of Home Depot plants, so repotting to check for those alone is worth it imo

Ypu don't have to fill the reservoir. On a few of my self watering pots, I just water like normal, they stay a little wetter as they resort up the water drains out, but nothing crazy. But if you hate it, just repot it, or pull out the wick

I have a fiddly fig that in a self-watering pot from either Lowe’s or Home Depot and it’s done really well! I just keep the string moist with water in the bottom and that’s it. I mist every few days, but no topsoil watering. So far, so good. And it’s a fiddly plant 🤷‍♀️

I do kind of remember it being rather wet when I brought it home and I chalked it up to being at a store where people probably watered it without knowing it was self-watering. Idk if that could line up to your timeline or not. In my experience the moisture balanced out in maybe a week.

Good luck either way!

I did just get it yesterday, and I didn’t think about people watering it without knowing, that’s probably the case. I’m gonna see if it gets a lil better by the end of the week 😆thank you
