# Why are my plants trying to root out of their pots? I have several…

Why are my plants trying to root out of their pots? I have several doing this. These are new pots so they have more than enough space in the soil! I repotted them into these clear pots only a few weeks ago.

Am I supposed to put a mesh of some kind at the bottom?

What do I do with these roots? I tried redirecting, but they just break or come back shortly after.

Time to repot in a slightly larger pot! It’s happy

It was repotted very recently! This one is my monstera, and it has just finally recovered from the repot and stopped being droopy. My monstera minima and a spider plant are doing it as well, both also recently repotted in these clear pots and lots of space left in the soil!

The roots will tap into standing water or moisture trapped under the pot. It doesn’t hurt the plant. Ensure the pot drains well after watering to reduce the moisture buildup below the pot.

I wouldn’t worry too much about protruding roots that short. That’s not a reason to repot. Repot only when you have more roots than soil in the pot. 🍀🪴

I’m worried they’re going to keep growing out instead of filling the soil 😅

This one currently sits on small gravel inside a ceramic pot that’s a bit too big, I try to let it drain well before I put it back but I’ll keep an eye on the moisture!

I definitely don’t want to repot, they’ve been in those pots only a few weeks and have plenty of free soil 😊

The gravel is probably holding moisture. I would recommend removing the gravel and getting an outer pot sized appropriately.

This happened with my syngonium a while ago, after i removed it from its decorative pot the roots dried out and backed off from growing out of the pot, regulatinng that moisture should prevent it from growing roots out of the bottom super bad if ur worried about that

My plants do this too, don’t worry about it. If there was tons and it had been a while it’d be an issue, but if you literally just upsized then the plant is probably just seeking extra moisture.
