# My cuttings aren’t growing roots and I don’t know what I’m doing…

_Opslået af bea 🌱 den 2026-04-09_

My cuttings aren’t growing roots and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I let them callous, I put them in succulent soil, I have a growlight. I have another jade cutting that’s doing wonderfully because it had aerial roots.

The bottom leaves of the jade are getting droopy. The top of the aloe is getting crispy. I think I ruined everything because I had to treat for fungus gnats (and I’m still treating them ongoing). Should I just give up on them?

From your photos and your description of what your jade is doing, I would say your soil is holding too much moisture. Jade actually needs soil to be dry in order to push roots. If they get water because the soil is damp they don’t have reason to “search” for it.

You need a dry, gritty mix…more than what you get from a cactus soil. Once you put the plants in the dry mix don’t water them for at least a week. When you do water, only water lightly and let them dry out completely.

Cuttings that don’t have aerial roots can take 2-6 weeks to root and even slightly damp soil can cause it to stall.

Aloe is a different beast altogether. If it is a leaf cutting there is very little chance for propagation. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone prop a leave cutting unless it has at the least a portion of base…(a pup).

If your soil is wet from gnat treatment just pull the plants out and let them dry out a couple days and then repot in a dry mix (cactus soil with added perlite and don’t water it for at least a week.

Hope this helps, let us know how it goes.

I should have mentioned that I treat plants with fungus gnats by making neem tea (a couple tbsp of neem cake in a gallon of water). Let is sit a day or two (I shake it up in an old milk jug a couple times a day but keep it covered…it stinks!) then water the affected plants. I also strain out the cakes once the tea is ready and mix it into the top half inch of the soil of the plants.
