# What could cause the orchids leaf to turn yellow? I was also thinking…

_Geplaatst door Miranda op 2024-03-19_

What could cause the orchids leaf to turn yellow?

I was also thinking of repotting it or at least removing the old orchid mix (haven’t changed it out since it was bought), but not sure if that’s the right move….

Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

It is not uncommon for the lower leave on an orchid to yellow, just as any other plant. I wouldn’t worry too much about it unless you start to notice other red flag signs/symptoms.

As far as repotting…is it currently putting out a new spike and or flowering?
If yes, I would leave it alone until its done.

If its not, what type of medium is it in right now? 100% sphagnum moss? If so, then I’d suggest repotting in an orchid specific medium in a pot with tons of drainage and air flow. Depending on the roots of your plant, you may be able to repot in it’s currently pot, just with a fresh medium.

If its already in an orchid mix, and in a pot with excellent drainage, and its roots don’t look too over grown in the pot, then I would leave it as is. Continue the regular care schedule, and be patient:) They typically produce blooms during fall/winter (colder months).

Sounds kinda crazy, but I have been digging out all the soil from my orchids and putting the bottom of the roots in water and they have been growing like never before!! I personally think that they can take care of themselves and regulate how much water they intake during that process.
