I don’t have a green thumb like my mom. After getting this app I’ve kept my plants alive for the last 10 months. (Pat on back - woohoo!)

When I water my plants now, should I be concerned that drainage happens quickly?

(Apologies if this is the wrong forum. Send me a link)

if water drains immediately, it might mean the soil is so dry/compacted that the water isn’t being absorbed by the soil. if that’s happening, the roots probably aren’t getting any/enough water.

if the water drains quickly but the soil is still asborbing water, i don’t see any inherent issue w that. see what others say too…

i really like bottom-watering.

These are all bare root potted plants in new loose soil. (All house plants) from last year

And yes, I can see now your point. I need to relax and be more nurturing.

Thank you!

Sometimes if a soil mix has too much peat, it will become hydrophobic. You can usually see this in the media drawing away from the side of the pot. If that happens bottom water it (set in a bowl of water that comes half up the pot. This will 'break up' the hydrophobic issue, and you can go back to top watering if that's your preference.

Thanks for this! I’m smart, and also a proud idiot.

I was advised not to bottom water.
And I think that may have been bad advice. (My mom could probably grow a tomato from a cigarette butt😀)

You know, personally I am not a bottom waterer. But it does help in these instances. And when mama tells you no. Your brains just trained not to go there 😆 😂
