# I'm following Planta's watering schedule for a pair of poinsettias…

_Gepostet von Doa am 2024-04-02_

I'm following Planta's watering schedule for a pair of poinsettias but it feels off. One of the two Plants is dying and soil is still very wet, planta wants me to keep watering.

Using the light monitor, it said I had partial sun, but light monitor seems to just be directional and not take direct / indirect into account or look at the actual light quality. Maybe it's not getting as much light as Planta thinks?

Other thing could be soil type, which I don't know.

Any thoughts?

A moisture meter is around $7 on Amazon. You can use that to determine whether soil is wet or dry. It definitely sounds like you are overwatering if it’s not a “close call” if the soil is dry or not.

Wait until completely dry before watering again. If it’s still not doing better; then try rearranging the light.

I use the Planta schedule just as a reminder to check the soil … I make the decision on whether to water or not based on my observations of the plant and what the soil at the bottom of the pot feels like. If I don’t think a plant needs water I snooze for 2 days and check again.

I agree with both of the above. Use the app as a reminder, not as a ‘must’. Everyones growing conditions are so variable that the app can’t account for everything.

If you don’t want a moisture meter, a wooden chopstick/skewer works just as well. You stick it into the soil to the bottom, when you pull it out soil will stick to it at the level of moisture in your pot giving you an accurate reading of whats going on underneath. I’ve used both moisture meter and chopstick, and I much prefer the chopstick method.
