# Hello! These are my current house plants! My baby spider was a gift…

_Lagt ut av Erin.M den 2025-09-19_

Hello! These are my current house plants! My baby spider was a gift from a student of mine and she’s definitely struggling!

I wanted to propagate the spider babies so I also bought myself a mature plant that’s beginning to produce!

Yesterday I added my golden pothos to my plant family!

I know nothing about plant care. My method of watering is just water as it feels right and I haven’t killed the spiders yet so I’m just going to keep on keeping on I guess? lol

Welcome to having plants! I started from scratch about 2 years ago killing all I touched, so you get the hang of it.

I started with easy plants and just figuring out watering and sunlight.

Then I moved on to adding fertilizer.

Then I moved onto adding more complicated plants. Then propagation and Moss poles and humidity and different things.

The plants that you started with are definitely among easier houseplants in my experience. My Bonnie spider plant has propagated enough to put one upstairs put one in a hanging basket and give one to my mom.

When it comes to water less is more usually. Don’t overwater and don’t over fuss.

Oh, another thing I was gonna say. I just got my first carnivorous plant. It had very specific care instructions that it came with to only use distilled water. Never fertilize never do anything crazy. So I might Google that little Venus fly trap looking one that you have. Or obviously get expertise from someone on here.

With my spiders I just kind of feel the soil. If the top is dry I will give it a generous water and leave it until it’s dry again

Thought I was replying directly to this, but apparently I did not 😆

That’s definitely a good rule of thumb. Unfortunately plants can be really easy and then the next one can be a temperamental little turd. My African violet it’s like don’t get any water on the leaves. Orchid don’t get any water on the leaves. Another plant keep completely moist at all times! Or a another plant might be water every month if even then. Planta had some pretty decent information when you add the plant to your collection and then I use go from that and Google.

It definitely also depends where you’re at and where you’re putting it. A lot of plants say they like a temperature range that just is not sustained in Washington state where I am. So I put those ones in my humid bathroom. Lol

I can’t comment on the flytrap plant. But, I have both pothos and spider plants.

The spider plants and pothos are easy going plants given sufficient light, water and fertilizer during the growing season. Both can live in lower light conditions but they need bright indirect light for 6 hours to 8 hours a day to thrive. Mine are outside in summer and get direct morning sun and bright shade from noon onwards. You can place them in south facing or west windows if a sheer curtain filters the intense sunlight. A grow light within 1 foot of the plant running at least 12 hours a day works too.

Fertilize the pothos and spider plants twice a month with 50% diluted fertilizer in the growing months. I reduce or stop fertilizing in the coldest months if the growth slows or stop and restart in spring. I keep fertilizing if they keep growing. I use miracle gro fertilizer with super thrive plant vitamins added in. The orchid fertilizer sprays on the leaves. I tried it on my Hoya plants. The Osmocote beads are slow release fertilizer that I use on plants that arrive with similar beads in their soil. Slow release and diluted liquid fertilizers have less chance of fertilizer burns. The beads last 3 to 6 months or longer depending on the brand.

Water when the soil dries out or the leaves droop. The leaf tips will dry out and leaves turn yellow when the plants are staying too dry too long.

Overwatering makes both plants yellow with brown soft leaf tips. Fungal growth can occur on the soil. Never water by a strict schedule always verify the soil is dry before watering. Spider plants hate sitting in continuously wet soil. Their thick roots hold a lot of water.
