# Hello! My mom purchased this Gardenia about a month or so ago, and…

Hello!

My mom purchased this Gardenia about a month or so ago, and when she repotted it, she put it into a 10-gallon (I think, maybe bigger) pot with no drainage. She did place large rocks into the bottom of it, but I don't think that makes a difference in this situation. We are in Central FL, and we keep this plant out on our back deck. Yesterday, we received torrential downpours, and the entire pot filled with water. To the point that there was standing water on top of the soil. Today, she managed to dump the water off the top, but the dirt is so waterlogged that it's essentially mud at this point. We brought it inside to dry out and placed it under a grow light so that it won't get rained on anymore (we are supposed to get a lot more rain today). But, at this point, is there anything else we can do? I'm concerned about it getting root rot and dying. I thought about having my son drill some holes into the bottom of the pot, but it's plastic, so idk if that will just crack it. However, I guess at this point, that might be better than its current situation. Any ideas would be appreciated, as I am hoping to save the plant! Thanks in advance!

If it’s that waterlogged I would try and take the plant out. To make the process easier you can cut the pot. I know gardenias don’t like wet soil so if you can, repot the plant into well draining acidic soil. Make sure you take as much soil off and examine the roots for root rot. I don’t own a gardenia so definitely research a good soil mix.

If you don’t want to repot then definitely drill drainage holes on the bottom. I would also place a circulating fan a nearby on low to medium speed. Dont point the fan directly on the plant because it might cause stress. Point it slightly down towards the soil. You can also try and dig a few holes to help bring air into the soil.

That pot is so heavy that I don't think we can repot it, but I definitely want to drill holes on the bottom. In the meantime, the fan is a good idea so I've just done that. Thank you!

I suggest preemptive anti-fungal treatment. If you use something gentle you can reduce the odds of getting root rot

That's a great idea! This weekend I'm hoping to get the holes drilled on the bottom (had to order a charger and drill bits for our drill), once we've done that I'll add an anti-fungal. Thank you!
