# I have just repotted my only orchid, and now I’m having problems…

_Geplaatst door Lynda op 2024-10-05_

I have just repotted my only orchid, and now I’m having problems figuring out when to water her. I used to be able to see her roots through the pot, but now, with the new orchid potting mix, and larger pot, I can’t see any of her roots, to tell if they’ve turned silvery, or not. How do I tell if my orchid needs water, unless I pull her out of the pot to see her roots, which I obviously don’t want to do. What other signs should I look for? TIA.…🤗💚🪴

Ok so this is going to sound exceptionally dopey on my part, but can you wriggle a gap in the potting media to see a root?

That’s a good idea, but I’ve tried, and the roots seem to be too deep with this repot; any other ideas? 🤗💚🪴

Watch the condensation on the pot? Usually if it’s all gone that’s when I water. TBF occasionally that has meant my poor orchid has gone a bit too long without though, so now I get reminded through the app to check more regularly 😂

Usually when the sphagnum moss is dry it’s time to soak again

I usually look at the leaves, if I see it floppy and wrinkly that's when I dunk the whole orchid in water

You actually wait until the leaves look wrinkly, and that won’t hurt my orchid? TIA for further comment, and thanks for your post…

No it's shouldn't hurt it, I have orchids planted in a mix of spagnum, charcoal, and orchid bark. It is in a clear container so I can see how dry the medium is, but floppy/wrinkly leaves is a sign of dehydration. I give it a good 20min soak in water and i do that 1 every 3 weeks

Thanks for your tip! I think that even I can figure out what a floppy/wrinkly orchid leaf looks like, so I shouldn’t have any trouble figuring out when my orchid is dry in the future. I appreciate the time you took to help me… 🤗💚🪴

Lift the pot up. It will be heavier when wet and lighter when dry
