# Why are Birkins such weird plants. They have the famous brown spots,…

_Geplaatst door Phil op 2026-02-08_

Why are Birkins such weird plants. They have the famous brown spots, which both of mine have. One is not as variegated anymore, even with an abundance of light, and the other, is just plain strange. Some new leaves come in partially very dark brown and gradually change to dark green. A couple leaves are almost completely white. It seems every leaf on the one plant comes in different. Makes for an interesting plant though.

Mine are the same! Can’t figure them out. But I feel like I can let them be without fussing too much

I have 3 plants in a larger pot. I have ones that start white and darken. No reverted ones. But some are stripier (?) than others.

They look so healthy! Love it! Mine’s still a little gal.

Mine has a pink hew to some of the leaves. A very pretty plant. Whatever you do don’t touch the leaves on the new growth. I accidentally snapped one off. 😳

They're weird because they're among the more complex hybrids in philodendrons. Their genetics have mixed messages in growth instructions and because it's a plant, it can revert to any of several varieties

Well I have to say they remain one of my favorites. Who wants normal and average? Not me.

Actually I’m glad to hear the brown spots are common. I’ve been struggling to find a solution.

Online you will find all sorts of “solutions” for the spots. But if you weed out the amateurs, you will find the experts saying it is just the way the plant is, and nothing is wrong.
