The soil looks pretty dense. Have you replanted? Might benefit from some chunkier soil. If it’s never been repotted, I agree that seeing if it needs repotting or repotting it in a chunkier soil mix with good drainage shouldn’t hurt, but while you’re repotting, I’d give the roots a check for any signs of distress or rot. Ficuses can lose leaves for a couple of reasons, such as shock from a change in its temperature or humidity, overwatering or underwatering, or root rot. If any of those sound possible, consider that as a possible cause of the loss of leaves. I place mine in Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent mix, but if you get an all-purpose potting mix (anything other than Miracle Grow Brand. Their soil isn’t well draining and would likely lead to root rot), and add some perlite and orchid bark to make the mix better draining, that should hopefully help your ficus perk up. If the roots look distressed or rotted, please feel free to come back and let us know, and I’d be happy to walk you through how to treat root rot. If you’re not sure if the roots look alright or not, attach a photo of them in the comments and I’ll try to confirm for you. I also agree that letting it dry out completely between waterings is good for ficus elastica. I wait at least 11-14 days before watering any of mine and test the soil for dryness before watering. They are a sign the soil is staying wet too long and is supporting a large amount of gnats. Wait until the soil is dry before watering, as recommended. Increase air circulation to faster dry the soil. Treat the gnats with water ad Mosquito Bits or the liquid MICROBE-LIFT BMC (Biological Mosquito Control). Both have the active ingredient Bacillus Thuringiensis subspecies Israelsis (BTI). BTI kills the gnat larvae in the soil ending the lifecycle. There will be no need for yellow sticky traps when BTI is used regularly. I have over 200 plants. I see about 2 gnats a month on my indoor plants. Gnats fly inside when the dogs come in.
