Hey all! I received an African Violet a few weeks ago. I’ve been letting her get used to her new environment , but will be repotting her today in an African violet pot. I have a question about the soil mix. On hand, I have house plant soil, orchard bark and perlite. Would a combo of any/all of these work or do I really need to buy AV potting mix for this one little plant? Appreciate any advise!

I use Miracle Gro Indoor potting mix. Seems to do fine. The key for me is using self watering African Violet pots.

Always bottom water this plant do not water the leaves, use spring still water and use a self watering pot also repot the plant is fresh soil every year

African Violets are very prone to crown rot (the base stem is called the 'crown') so it's best to allow that part of the plant to set a few centimeters above the soil line, just enough that it's secure and not wobbly. Despite the tendency towards rot, they're still very thirsty plants, so I use self-watering pots with a well-draining medium, 2 parts African Violet potting soil + 1 part perlite + 1 part freshwater aquarium gravel. All I have to do is keep the water reservoir full and set my plants in bright, indirect light, and they bloom \& grow beautifully!
