New plant parent here 🤰

Hi all, I’m an extremelyyyy fresh new plant parent but I’m doing everything I can to learn the basics (I’m post grad and have a lot of time right now). I found a mature snake plant on Facebook marketplace and am picking it up today, I did research on the basics of how to take care of it, but do yall have any tips that Google won’t tell me?? Specifically related to soil type, fertilizer, placement?

Any super secret hacks or things I should definitely know for keeping it indoors?? Let me hear it all!! Thanks so much!!

Love this plant was one of my first ones and will give them as gifts because they are so hardy! Babies will shoot out all over. Enjoy

The quickest way to kill one of these (or just about any plant) is over watering. Make sure your soil drains well. The first one I had I killed in about a month because it was in a self watering pot and never dried out any. My current favorite method is to have a cache pot for each plant. That’s when you have a smaller plastic pot inside a larger, decorative pot. I check to see if my plant needs water by picking up the smaller pot and seeing if it’s heavy or light. Here’s a pic to demonstrate. There are lots of other methods, this is just what finally worked for me after many killed plants.

Thank you for the detailed comment! Did you amend the soil in anyway or just regular potting soil?

I’m slowly but surely changing most of my plants to a chunky mix with coir, perlite/vermiculite, and other stuff. It’s a mix made by my local plant store, so I’m not sure what all is in it.

Yikes I may be in the process of killing mine because of over-watering

Unfortunately it’s easy to do!

A nice chunky soil, I mix one part happy frog one part orchid bark one part perlite . I've had my snake plant for decades. I let it go bone dry, sometimes two months or more before watering and then water real well letting it drain completely. He is a big boy. 😁

I have a hard time with these snake plants. Every single one of them that I've had I've killed. I have one now thats doing ok. But I've finally figured out what I'm doing wrong its not enough light and watering it to much. So put it in a bright light and water it when planta says. (As long as the soil is completely dry) Also if the soil is mostly peat moss i would cgange it. You can get some good soil and add perlite or pumice and orchard bark, even charcoal and worm castings. Just make sure it's chuncky.

Oh and they like to be root bound. You know really snug in the pot. Don't put it into a bigger pot until the roots are coming out of the sides and bottom of the pot.

Snake plants are my favorite. Lucky you! After letting the babies acclimate (at least two weeks), change the soil to a nice chunky mix (I use Rosy Soil cactus and amend with orchid bark, perlite, earthwork casting and diatomaceous earth). Water thoroughly, then don’t water until completely dry. Good luck and enjoy!

The one I got isn’t a baby, it’s pretty mature like 3-4 feet tall. Does changing the soil still apply here? How do I know when to change the soil

I’d keep it in its pot and let it adjust to its new home. If it looks healthy, I’d just keep it just like it is.

I’ve had success in pretty bright light (next to but not directly in a south facing window). Seems like mine thrives the more I ignore her. I like cactus soil for her because it’s easy and well draining. Good luck!
