# Snake plant lighting question…which of these 3 options is best?…

_Posted by Sarah on 2024-12-04_

Snake plant lighting question…which of these 3 options is best? They’re my only 3 options for my house layout:

1\) directly in an East facing window
2\) directly in a South/South East facing window that gets bright indirect light
3\) under grow lights about 10 feet from a window

You should get a light meter or use a light meter app to measure the amount of light at each location. Then, check the lighting needs of the plants online. The grow light manufacturer will state the amount (ft-candles, lumens) of light their grow lights put out at certain distances.

Many variables affect light including location, time of year, weather conditions, obstructions, distance from the light source and even pollution. It’s more accurate to measure the light. 🍀🪴

Thanks for the input. That’s not something I can do right now so I’m just taking my best guess since I don’t have a meter lol.

They have a light meter on this app that you can use. It works really well, they just recommend doing it around mid afternoon because that’s when it’s the brightest outside

Go into the site. Click lighting. And at the top it measures the light, face your forward facing camera towards the light where the plant will be. It's pretty accurate, was only about 20 difference than my actual handheld light meter.

I’d put it in the east facing window and then slowly transition it to the south east facing window, contrary to what people think, snake plants can actually tolerate lots more light and will grow more when given the chance, given that they’re from arid African plains originally. They survive in low light but thrive in higher light.

It has been in the East facing window for a few months and considering moving it to the SE window. You think it’s been long enough to now be in the SE full time?

Oh totally, especially in these winter months I’m sure it would love all the sun, sadly my place only has east facing so I’m low key stressing over my plants this winter lol
