# Does anything else think Planta suggests watering plants way too…

Does anything else think Planta suggests watering plants way too often?

Also apologies if this has been discussed to death before.

I signed up for Planta about a year ago because I wanted to get into taking care of houseplants but didn’t feel comfortable and confident so the auto watering schedule was a huge selling point. I now have almost 40 thriving plants! Overall it’s been wonderful and it was Planta that gave me the confidence.

But recently I’ve noticed that most of the plants that it tells me to water still have very moist soil when read with a soil moisture meter (I mostly bottom water my plants to avoid gnats).

I input all the information into the app, the distance from the window, pot size, growing medium, everything.

Anyways, now when it tells me to water I’ll take a moisture reading and if it’s still moist I’ll skip until next time. Sometimes I’ll skip multiple times in a row and all those plants are still doing fine great which suggests that Planta is telling me to water way too frequently.

Anyone else noticing this?

Yes this sometimes happens to me as well, but the planta watering schedule is more for just a reminder to check the soil, or at least thats what i use it as. If this happens a lot to you, you can always go into the plants settings and make your own schedule based on what you notice the plant needs! :) hope this helped!

Thanks! Yeah that’s what I’m using it as at this point. It was just that the auto schedule was a big selling point and it doesn’t seem to work very well

Yeah I get it, it is a little irritating, the plants that have this problem for you might need watering more often possibly? And thats why they are still moist when you check the soil? Otherwise just make sure you dont overwater

Possibly! And I know that every kind of plant will be different. Though I also read many times that slightly under watering is better than over watering which is why I’m hesitant to do so.

Happens to me too. I watered my cactus practically every 3rd day for a while, and now it’s moist as heck.

Funnily enough it’s my two cacti that Planta seems to actually get right when it comes to the auto schedule 😆

Yes it is way too often for most of my plants but it makes me look at them which I think is a good thing.

I’d prefer it to say something like: “Time to check your plant to see if it’s time to water, here’s how you do it.. this kind of plant likes its soil to be this dry before watering, etc” that way I’d be learning more about the individual plants and not running the risk of overwatering as a newbie.

That would be such a good way of fixing the issue, instead of saying “water now!” And it doesn’t even let you put in actual humidity or temp into your plant schedule, just normal low or high. Which truly affects plants indoors. Also, I have seen that for any plant it usually says to water it every two weeks and that’s wayyyy too much for most plants. A lot of the problems newbies run into is overwatering because they think they are right in following the app to a “t”

Thanks Alyssa! And you’re right I have humidifiers for my tropical plants so their humidity isn’t taken into account. Ive been loving planta but there are definite ways they could improve!

Hey I like that idea!

If you click the task for the plant, it does say if they prefer to dry out, have even watering, or stay moist. I check that a lot now. Of course, occasionally that is wrong, like I just picked my Ping carnivore plant to use as an example and it told me succulents like to dry out 😮! Pings are definitely not succulents and DO NOT like to dry out. They like bog-like conditions.

#### Erikh svarte den 2024-05-28

Oh thanks Krista! I didn’t know that. Seems like it would actually be pretty easy for them to modify the interface to make this information more prominent when they tell you it’s time to check to see if watering is necessary.

Yeah
I have a baby rubber plant and they have to dry out completely
Plants says to water them every 5 days but it is still wet

Same!

Yes. I use a soil water meter

### Bella56 kommenterte den 2024-05-28

Yes! I see this problem happening with String of Turtles and pearls, it tells me to water weekly and in reality I’m watering them every 3/4 weeks. I’m constantly “snoozing” the task for a week

1000000%

Yes. Most the time I snooze
watering multiple times

Seems like Planta just released a new schedule learning feature that will help to address exactly what I was having issues with! Awesome!
