# I have discovered that bottom watering plants is ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS…

_Lagt ut av Lynda den 2024-08-07_

I have discovered that bottom watering plants is ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS since I have so many plants that need to be watered every day. It just blows my mind because it makes watering so easy and much less tedious! One question; I’m using this method for my moisture loving plants, BUT, can I use the same method for plants like corn plants, pathos, or anything that needs to be totally dry before I water it? Normally I would use a wooden stake to check for moisture levels in these plants to see if they are completely dry.
CAN I BOTTOM WATER PLANTS like these THAT NORMALLY LIKE TO DRY OUT COMPLETELY? TIA for any return posts. 🤗💚🪴
PS. Here’s a few of my plants that like to dry out completely, and there’s more, 😵‍💫!

You can for sure! You’ll have to let them soak a bit longer, just make sure you’re still checking if they need water or not first.

With my moisture, loving plants, I am just leaving water in the bottom of their decorative container, (they are potted in plastic pots). But, I suppose that my plants that like to remain dry, should not remain in water for an extended time; is that correct? Do you know how long plants can sit in water to absorb what they need? I’m hoping that this is a permanent self watering situation, ???.
Any information about this method would be greatly appreciated, not just for me, but for at least another person. TIA for your thoughts.
Regards, 🤗💚🪴

What’s your method for bottom watering? I also have too many plants to water at once… that’s my own fault, but time-saving hacks are welcome!

I am brand new to this method of watering; I’ve just ignored it for many years. But I have so many plants to take care of and the ones that need daily or every other day watering, really are a lot of work. I’m looking for more information on this, also. What I’ve done is just put water in the bottom of their decorative container as they are in a plastic pot, and their plastic pot is in a decorative container. What I still don’t know is whether I can leave them in that water so that they can absorb what they need or whether they get waterlogged. The ones that I have put water in the bottom of their decorative pots, I have checked once and found that they had sipped only what they need. I have a hydrometer, and it measures percentage of moisture, which is very helpful. I am encouraged to see that, so far, they don’t seem to be overly wet. I still don’t know about doing this with my plants that need to be dry before watering; I’m afraid that they may stay too moist for their health. I’m going to ask plant members a few more questions about this and see what comments I get. Stay tuned and maybe we’ll both learn something!
Regards,🤗💚🪴

Thank you for your response! This definitely sounds like a more practical method for plants that need water every 1-2 days.

Hey Lynda! I’ve got tons of plants that need to dry out fully before a watering also. They are completely fine to let them sit in the water, I usually let sit for 30 mins at most although this isn’t a hard and fast rule (I usually stick my finger in to test if I can feel a difference in the soil) Overwatering isn’t about the quantity of water it’s about the frequency. Once I switched to clear plastic pots (sit inside decorative pot) I noticed that if I only water until the water comes out of the drainage holes, about 50-70% of soil was still bone dry. Since letting them soak, yes some do stay wet longer (if it’s WAY longer this is a good indication that it needs an airy and chunkier soil) as long as I’m checking the soil before the next watering I’ve had no losses, no issues, no root rot at all. hope this helps give you an idea! I have a few huge deep plastic saucers that I fill and set multiple plants in at a time in the saucer I’ve been finding this is the fastest way for me to get watering day done! It’s nice cause I can set some in the saucers and still be able to do other things while they soak!

Thanks so much for your informative post. I think I’ll also give this a try with my plants that like to dry out. I’ve heard about bottom watering, but was never interested in trying it out, but with so many plants, it has forced me to look at new options; I think this will be a great time saver. 🤗💚🪴
