# I’ve noticed a number of you are using some kind of sunscreen outside…

_Lagt ut av Lynda den 2025-04-04_

I’ve noticed a number of you are using some kind of sunscreen outside of your windows to screen plants on the inside from sunlight. I have two windows, one large window facing south, and another large window facing west. Most of my plants in these places are tropical, and like moderate light; however, these windows will provide an over abundance of sunlight during summer. My plants are in these windows now, because I live in Oregon, and I don’t think the sun is strong enough to burn them at this point. My question is, what percentage of sun should I want to block, 30%, 40%, or 50%? I’ve included pictures of a couple of sunscreens I found on Amazon, and would like some feedback on what you all have, so I can pick an adequate shade for this summer. TIA!

Sheer window curtains are good enough to block sunlight from a south facing window. I have my plants in south windows during winter. I don’t know the percent of light that is blocked.
I would start with the lower number shade block. Also, window film can block some light. Use a light meter or light meter app to measure the light intensity that hits the plants.

Ivw never used a screen for inside. I have the custom one I got from Megagreenhouse for like $8 I think. It's 6x8 for the stoop outside. Inside I have film on a few of the south windows and a darkening film on the west window.

This is the darker film

This is similar to the one I have on 2 south windows. It's only 1/2 up the window, and there for actual privacy, but it does block some light uv

Wolfen, please check my question under equipment and materials. TXS!

I think the sun shades you have pictured will be too much for blocking Sun on indoor plants. I have only seen those heavy screens in greenhouses above plants.
