# I was recently put in charge of taking care of my 92-year-old…

_Postat av Adrian den 2024-12-26_

I was recently put in charge of taking care of my 92-year-old great-aunt’s guzmania for her. I’m new to bromeliads and read that they slowly start to die on their own after a while, and could really use some help with what to expect and how to care for a plant like this. It is already flowering and was recently gifted to her. TIA for any responses.

(I’d also like to wish everyone happy holidays, especially to those whose holidays are yet to come 😊)

I have one and i watter once a week and leave water in the bottom leaves, mine is slowly dying but putting out two new babys, these dont need big root systems and may not have any at all, they live off the water from their cup like leaves. These plants can act like a parisite by attaching to other plants like trees and stuff but take no nutrience from the plant it is attached to. These plants grow huge sideways and prefer medium light, moderately moist soil, and a home temp of 55-80° F (13-27°C)

These bottom leaves you want to keep water in. This is where little frogs would lay eggs and the tadpoles would live 🥰

Thanks for all the info! Would you suggest that I repot it in leca or something hydroponic, then? I’ve read that even the most well draining soil can lead to rot for these. And would bottom watering work for this, then, or should I just stick to adding water to the cups?

For mine i use an all purpose potting soil with added orchid bark for better drainage and top water once a week while also keeping water in the cups and i have no issue with rotting

I LOVE my two Bromeliad's ❤️ I keep my cups full of clean (never tap) water. I'm old school and use the 4 ice cube watering method once 7-8 days. The cubes slowly melt into the topsoil-- that's ALL they need 🥰💯 Keep them near a big window and they will be very happy 😊 The bloom lasts weeks and weeks--- you'll start to see "pups" develop on the side of the base. When they are READY- they just pull away from the "parent" plant 🪴 and thus starts the whole beautiful cycle anew 🥰🪴
