I want to invest in some house plants to have for a while as I enjoy growing plants from little babies, but me and my partner want to get cats and dogs in the future. What are some of your favourite pet safe plants?

Peperomias! They come in a ton of colors and leaf varieties, they’re usually pretty cheap, and they’re very beginner friendly and low maintenance as long as they’re potted in well-draining cactus mix of epiphytic/bromeliad mix and get to completely dry out between waterings. They’re also great if you have lower-light spaces. Mine enjoy north-facing windows that only get 2-4 hours as sun just as much as they do my south facing windows. They account for about half of my current collection and I love getting them for my friends with pets or that are new to houseplants.

This one’s a rarer one, but one I’ve really fallen in love with in recent months. It’s called a Peperomia Maculosa, and makes for a great non-toxic alternative for a philodendron. It’s actually edible and said to taste like cilantro. They’re typically pretty hard to find where I live, and I’d never seen one for less than $40 online, but I somehow managed to spot one for $14 at my local nursery and nabbed it so fast. I still wonder if someone maybe priced it wrong 😂 but this one’s mine. His name’s Bennie, and for $40 a pop, a little too pricy for me to take a bite out of a leaf.

Wow! Thanks for answering this text! I learned a lot! I think I may add a few to my collection as well. I’ve taken a photo of a plant that may be what you are speaking of. Often at our HD the plants don’t have names….just tropical printed in the label. I also got the one below it, but it’s struggling to put on leaves.

That’s probably because it’s in a self-watering pot. Peperomia obtusifolias enjoy completely drying out between waterings. That one would probably be considered a “golden gate” variegated cultivar of peperomia obtusifolia. You’ll probably have to check the roots for signs of distress or rot, but if you repot it into a terra cotta or plastic pot with drainage holes, and repot it with a well-draining cactus or epiphytic mix, (mine enjoy Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Mix. I’d avoid Miracle Grow’s soil in this case as their soil isn’t well-draining enough for a peperomia) it should do just fine. They also like being more snug in their pots and getting a little rootbound between repottings, so opting for something no more than 1-2 inches wider in diameter than the width of the plant’s root ball would help it dry out faster and tell it to focus on developing new foliage rather than more roots to fill up extra space in the pot.
