It depends on the plant size. Seedlings should have the soil kept moist. Mature plants can drink up to two gallons of water a day. I use self watering grow pots to ensure they get enough water.

I agree with Heather but tomato plants can get pretty dry and Droopy and stressed looking and still perk back up within an hour or two when they are watered. The most important time is when they are very small.
