# Recently got a Venus fly trap and I’m wondering what to feed the guy?…

_Lagt ut av Ella den 2024-03-20_

Recently got a Venus fly trap and I’m wondering what to feed the guy? Should I buy little bugs from the pet store? Would it be okay to go out in my front yard and find little bugs?
Also, should I place it next to my humidifier even tho I’m keeping it sitting in water all the time?

I opt for dried mealy worms from petsmart/co. And yes these are bog plants so I keep mine high humidity sitting in 1/2 inch to 1 inch of water

But should I also use the humidifier around it? Is so how often?

Doesnt really matter what you decide to feed it if it’s natural bugs without a ton of additives. If it’s dried bugs from the store you’ll have to soak them in water first. You can feed them bugs from the yard. I fed mine a little beetle looking thing I caught yesterday lol

Normally I use ground beta pellets and bloodworms. I mix it into a paste and feed them with a toothpick.

Whatever you feed it just make sure it fits in the mouth completely so that the mouth can seal. If not the digestive juices could leak out and negatively affect the trap.

As for the humidity I think most plants prefer the 35-50% range. With how moist the soil needs to be I don’t think humidity is really a big issue. Especially if you’re letting it sit in water. That’s also not a requirement. Just makes it easier for those that forget to water tbh. If interested I can paste a long list of the basic info regarding the plant

Consistent ambient humidity is important, so a humidifier or above 50% humidity always is your goal!

I wouldn’t leave your fly trap sitting in water, a lot of people do it, but sometimes it still causes them to rot. Instead, keep the moss on the wetter side, just never let it fully dry out. Also only use distilled water as carnivorous plants cannot handle contaminates in water including nutrients.
