So my peace Lilly had root rot so I decided to transfer it to water. I have only done this successfully once so tips would be appreciated. I tried not to cover the plant in water so I just covered the rhizomes. But please give me tips to keep this going.

If the root rot was caused by overwatering, I don’t know if I’d recommend trying to transfer it to water. You might wanna consider repotting it in soil, and soaking the roots in a mixture of 1 part hydrogen peroxide, 2 parts water for 30 minutes, then rinsing the roots under water and gently patting them dry with a paper towel before repotting it. The peroxide will kill any lingering bacteria to prevent the root rot from coming back and promote oxygen absorption so the roots grow back faster. I don’t have a peace lily, so I can’t tell you what type of soil it loves, but I swear by Espoma brand Organic soil and they have a lot of different types, and I’ve heard a lot of praise about Foxfarm’s soil, particularly their Ocean Forest All-Purpose mix. Hope this helps!

My lily (not the same I know) she is over 30 years old and she was not doing well. I put her in leca and she’s got 5 new shoots 🙂

The roots look healthy! Is this pic after cutting off the root rot?

I have an Alocasia nebula that was acting weird where all three stems drooped down. My first reaction was to water it, but then after it didn’t respond, I got suspicious about what the root ball would look like if I pulled it out of the pot. I pulled it out and it barely had any roots. Almost all the soil fell away, because there were no roots to hold it in place. And the few roots it had were so short and thin that if I had kept it in soil, it would have died. It wasn’t able to take in appropriate water and nutrients because the roots didn’t have the capacity. While it may seem counterintuitive to change a plant over to being hydroponic, it can be a great way to save a plant. With the soil out of the way, the plant has constant access to water and nutrients that can be taken up much faster than in soil. You may have heard about how hydroponic plants grow bigger and faster than traditional growing. So, good job getting your plant into a hydro environment. If you have not done so, get an aquarium air pump and an air stone in the water. This will oxygenate the water and help the roots stay strong and clean. It’s also helpful when you feed the plant, because it keeps the nutrients circulating and available to all roots. My nebula now has many roots that are a foot long and is now putting out a new leaf. I’m actually going to leave the plant in the water. I only need to top off the water and now there is no such thing as over watering. If you want to find out more about your setup, research “hydroponic deep water culture.” I hope this helps!
