# My mom dropped my jade plant and the terra-cotta pot it was in broke.…

My mom dropped my jade plant and the terra-cotta pot it was in broke. She replanted it in one of those self watering pots but it doesn’t have the wick. It looks like it has a drainage hole although idk how that would work if the water collects at the bottom and the plant is supposed to be bottom watered with the wick, which it’s not doing because I just watered it from the top and I do see some water draining out of the bottom. It has this little window to see where the waters collected. It seems to be an extremely shallow pot despite the size, which I put my moisture meter in it barely went down into it. Should I put it in something else? Also, what are these white dots (completely unrelated to the fall obviously)?

Did she repot it directly in this or the nursery pot? If it is in a nursery pot, you can keep it in this but use it as a normal pot (since you don’t have the wick you will water it in the nursery pot and remove any drained water). If she didn’t use a nursery pot you absolutely need to repot because that doesn’t have drainage (since it is a water container). These usually hold 6” nursery pots and have a few inches between the nursery pot and the decorative for the water.

Thank you. I did end up reporting it. Turns out there was a nursery pot in there but it was impossible to get out to water it.

the spots on the leaves are mineral deposits. try using distilled water

I’ve seen some self watering pots the have no wicks. They have deep recesses that extend down into the water instead of wicks. But you probably did best by repotting. I can’t imagine a jade would do well in that kind of pot.
