Quick question:
I want to get a Monstera. Im a beginner in these types of stuff.
If you have a monstera, pls tell me how hard it is to care for, how much light it needs, etc.
TIA!!
Also, planta says that monstera plant is toxic to humans. What does that mean?

I got a monstera in March and I would say she is pretty straight forward to care for, you need a support for the base of the plant and lots of light for more of a chance of fenestration. Once in a while I dust off the leaves and I follow planta’s watering guide which seems to be working. This is my monstera rn and she just produced a leaf without fenestration because I moved her to a place without as much light as previously but she’s healthy! I fertilise her once every two watering as well. Also toxic to humans just means don’t eat! I hope this helped a little but overall they are easy plants!!

They are pretty easy to care for. They need a good chunky soil because their roots like some aeration. People also tend to over water, but I’ve always let mine dry out before watering again.

I’ve had good results in both a north facing or east facing window. I’m assuming toxic to humans means don’t eat it! 😊

I have our monstera outside in a greenhouse with a lot of humidity around it to give it lots of water in the air and she seems to like that. I also just repotted her into a soil mix that she apparently loves. Foxfarm soil (the tropical fish bag because I’m bad with names), peralite and orchid bark. 1/3 each. I also had to make her a bigger moss pole, but they naturally grow up trees so if you give it something to root into like spag moss it will appreciate it. Also the bottom fourth of my pot is LECA to help keep some humidity in the roots. She loves the light and the heat of the greenhouse.

Oh and I keep the moss pole damp but I don’t water the soil much. Damp moss for happy roots. 😄

Hey, can I ask does your moss pole go to the bottom of your pot?

Yea! So I bought a eight foot piece of rebar and some six foot wide chicken wire. Made a square out of the wire and boom. Massive moss poll for this monster. 😄

I have a juvenile monstera and is just now starting to produce leaves with fenestration. I personally do not use moss poles. Moss poles are great to use however they require constant maintenance with watering and such. I don’t have the time for that so I use regular garden stakes or for larger monsteras I’ve seen people use trellises. You can cut aerial roots as well if needed. They can root into your floors or walls so make sure your monstera is supported!

I use a chunky soil with orchid bark and perlite to help with drainage. I water weekly or every week and a half depending on how wet the soil is. To check, just put a wooden into the top 2inches of soil and see if any dirt sticks.
Clean = water
Some dirt = leave it
You can also just stick your finger in and check.

I keep my monstera in an east facing window. She gets direct morning light and indirect bright the rest of the day. If you do this please make sure you acclimate your monstera or else the leaves can burn. You can also use grow lights if you don’t have adequate lighting.

I also spray my monstera with neem oil every week after watering as a preventative measure against pests. Just be careful with that or other sprays. Make sure you spray at night because neem oil can burn your leaves if you put the plant in direct sunlight.

I fertilize my plant every month or you can do every other watering. Only fertilize and repot during growing season which is spring or summer. Your monstera will go into a dormant state during the winter and not do much growing. You can also water less during that time.

All in all, they’re easy to care for. So I wish you luck!
