What’s your view on repotting plants that are doing well? Planta recommends repotting four of my plants and all of them are thriving in response to a new fertilizer I’m using. One has new leaves unfurling and new shoots as well right now. Will the shock of repotting be too much? They all need better draining soil but will go back into the same pot they’re in now.

The only way to tell is by examining the roots which if they need better draining soil I’d for sure go plus it’s a great time of year to check and repot.

If they are doing well I would recommend checking the growth process, and how healthy it is first, if the plant seems fine, I would then check the very bottom of the soil to see if there is any rotting at the bottom, that could mean the roots aren’t super healthy and the soil is not helping. So repot the plant. Also, the size of the plant pot could also be too small if the plant is growing at a good pace, so to help it grow better, a bigger pot would be good.

I hope this helps!!

Check to see if the type of plant you want to repot has already done is seasonal but growth spurt, if not, wait until it has. Such as orchid, if you repot during bloom, they usually don’t do well, or flowering plants. But if their main growing season is done, then check to see the type of climate they would need the most for repotting.

Reasons to repot that I use:
\- Overgrown roots block drainage causing root rot, yellowing/dying leaves and stems
\- I want the plant to grow larger. So, I repot at the start of the growing season into a pot no more than 2 inches wider than the current one.
\- There are lots of new roots outside the pot living in the drainage water that I don’t want to cut off. I repot to put those roots into soil.

It depends how long they’ve been in the pot. Over time, potting soil degrades and compacts, and eventually it suffocates the plant. Usually this is a good time to repot if you’re going to—plants are a little sleepy in the winter and they weather the shock better when they aren’t growing as actively. So as others said, maybe just check on the roots—if the soil isn’t gummy and there’s room for growth you can leave it.
