# My spider plant has been growing a baby for a over a month now, and I…

My spider plant has been growing a baby for a over a month now, and I saw that you can add them into the same pot as the mum to make her bigger/thicker. The baby is about 6 cm tall now and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on doing this as it’s my first time propagating or growing a plant from a baby. :)

You can! Several options really. If possible you can loop it around while still attached and push the bottom into the mama pot. If that's not possible I usually push them into a baby pot, then once rooted you can transfer. I have seen a lot of people water prop the roots, either while still attached or not. But I haven't done that, as they usually root well just in the soil, with or without a rooting powder/liquid

This is good advice. The only thing I’ll add is that in dryer climates where the top layer of soil dries out quickly after watering, I’ve had better success with water propagating.

Either way, if you can leave the “pup” attached to the mother plant while it’s forming roots, you give the pup a better chance at survival.

That's a good point. I'm in WA so my ambient is like 50-60%. This golden dragon was watered yesterday, went to pull off the baby INVADER!! From the Hawaiian mother on the left. , but its already started rooting, so gonna leave it till the baby spider roots get bigger.

Amazing thank you so much, the stem is very long for the baby so can definitely bend round into the mother pot.

I live in Cornwall which is pretty humid so shouldn’t have much problem with that. But definitely will keep it attached to the mother plant while forming its roots!

I would wait till it has a little more root on the baby before planting it with the mom

Do yours do that? Mine never root on the mother unless I intervene with a pot of dirt. I've had some for 2-3 months, fully formed miniatures, but never get roots while in the air.??

Yes, I've transplanted quite a few babies that have a substantial amount of root while still attached to the mother. I just cut it off and press the roots into some fluffy soil. I have seen others that don't seem to be developing a root system and those will still grow the others just have a head start.

I had no idea that they could form roots while not in soil or water, I’ll leave it a bit longer to see if she grows any!

That's so awesome! Mine would never 😆 🤣

They are sooooo easy to propagate. Just snip it off and place it in the pot. Secure it in place with a plant pin or a u shaped Bobby pin. It will root in no time

Woah she’s gorgeous!! I hope mine grows half as successful as her, I got mine for 50 p outside someone’s house a year ago. So pretty proud of her so far!
