# Good early morning friends! Just had a late night thought and wanted…

_Gepostet von Hanna Scott am 2025-03-09_

Good early morning friends! Just had a late night thought and wanted to throw it out there. When is the best time to use a grow light? I’m thinking the answer is pretty obvious, night time I’m assuming lol
What color light? I’m seeing yellows, whites and purples. Does it depend on the type of plant?
Thank you! 🪴 🌵

A plant light is used to either increase the intensity of the light it is receiving in your home or to extend the hours of light it gets each day. It does not need to be on during the night. Blue and red are the most effective colors in the light spectrum for plants. If you look at the various bulbs I believe there's some that have a wide spectrum of light including the reds and blues. I'm not sure what the yellows and whites and purples do.

Use the grow light as a sun replacement. So, it should be tracking daylight hours. Mine are on for 12 hours a day starting between 6am and 9 am. They are on timers.

i heard that some colors can help encourage the plants to flower, but im not sure how true that is! IMO, full spec is best, as it mimicks the sunlight the best, and is most often a white light, which wont strain the eyes, and its a whole lot easier to identify any problems that the plant might be trying to tell you. in one of the classes i am taking, we did a mini lab with plants and colored lights - green did the worst, red and violet had good results, and white light with the higher wattage had the best results (highest rate of photosynthesis)! the short explanation for this is that it provides more wavelengths for the plant to use rather than a single color! hope this helps!
