When do you know when to repot your plants? I know I have some that are WAY overdue for it. One has been in a pot for five years; but doing quite well—very healthy.

When the roots start circling the bottom of the pot, that is called root bound

When roots are more than 50% of the pot; lots of plants put roots to the bottom before filling the rest of the pot.

Yup, and some plants actually enjoy being root bound. The monstera is one of them.

Ok, good to read that. Interesting that some like that… you’d think it would start to somewhat suffocate itself by cutting off other roots.

That’s only in the pot for ONE year! I was floored!!!

For succulents, if they are sucking up the water super fast (in a couple hours) it might mean they need more dirt to provide them water. You’ll have to dump them out to see how big the roots actually are, but it’s a good sign to look. I’d say probably for any plant, if it shows signs of distress, and you have had it a while, it’s a good time to pull it out and have a look.

No need to repot if the plant is happy and healthy. I have some in the same pot for years and they like it like spider plants and tradescantias.

Repot the ones that are not doing well because of being root bound. Ensure the new pot is not too big. It should be only 1 inch or 2 inches wider than the current pot.
