# Hi! I’m new here, and I’m trying (again) to be a houseplant mom after…

Hi! I’m new here, and I’m trying (again) to be a houseplant mom after many unsuccessful attempts over the years.

I bought this Schismatoglottis wallichii on Saturday at Walmart. She was in a wick and grow pot and had two yellow wilting leaves. I checked the pot when I got home, and there was no water. So I put water in the outside pot and put her back in with the wicks in the water.

She started guttating Saturday night. It sounds like this is normal if she got too much water. I checked the outside pot yesterday, and it was empty. She’s still guttating this morning. My moisture probe says the soil is just barely moist.

Do I wait to water again until she stops guttating? Is this the wrong pot for her? I don’t want to repot her yet as she’s adjusting to her new home. But I’ve killed a lot of plants, so I don’t exactly trust myself.

I appreciate any guidance y’all kindly provide!

I’m glad you didn’t give up on plants! We all had to learn the hard way in the beginning, so don’t be too hard on yourself!

This plant prefers for the soil to completely dry out between watering, so yes I would definitely wait. Personally I don’t like self-watering pots because I feel like they keep the bottom of the soil too wet.

You could wait a week to let the plant adjust to the new environment before repotting, but personally I just repot right away (I’m always scared of pests) and it hasn’t been an issue so far.

Definitely choose a pot with lots of holes in the bottom for drainage. These guys like a well-draining soil. A mixture of 2 parts perlite to 1 part soil would be great.

Thank you for the encouragement and the advice! I didn’t think about pests 😳 I’ll look for a new pot this weekend and get some perlite. Appreciate you!

No problem! :)

Hi hi!!! I’m so happy you came back to the plant life!! So personally I don’t use those self watering pots because they will give your plants root rot so fast! Definitely let the soil dry out like 50-75% before watering. I’ve found moisture meters are not accurate enough. I use a wooden chop stick! Stick it in the soil and pull it out, if there’s soil on the stick it doesn’t need water. If there’s no soil stuck to the stick it’s time to water!!

You can repot whenever you feel comfortable. I always repot when I get home before taking the plant inside and I’ve not had any problems. Also your pot should only be about 2 inches larger than the root ball ☺️

Kay, thank you! I never heard about the wooden chopstick tip. I don’t have one, but I think I have some wooden skewers. I’ll try that. And I appreciate the advice on repotting right away before taking the plant inside + info on size of pot. I’m so glad I joined this community!

Hi. The advice you got already is good, and for the most part I agree with repotting immediately. However, there are a few plant families I would not repot immediately if you decide to keep going with houseplants. They are calatheas, begonias, and most String of… plants (pearls especially, but hearts and all as well). Those plants like to throw hissy fits at the slightest change, so just bringing them home is enough to stress them out to where they will drop all of their leaves and possibly even die (pearls). Just make sure if you don’t repot immediately that you keep them away from your other houseplants until you can fully repot and inspect everything. Good luck!

Thank you, Krista! So much learning from one post. I’m grateful for your insight.
