# Hi! I have this Spider plant, and I’m assuming this is a pup? New to…

_Posted by Maria on 2024-11-11_

Hi! I have this Spider plant, and I’m assuming this is a pup? New to this, but when can I try to propagate this pup? Haven’t done this before with Spider plant. Should I wait until the pup is bigger? Where do I cut the pup when it’s ready? Water propagation or straight to soil when it’s big enough? Help! Thank you 😀

The flowers and pups are found on the same stem. And it forms flowers before producing a pup.

My spider plant hates me..... it's a whole story. But it came from my friends coworker. She waits until the look like a little spider plant, before nipping them off.

I want to hear this😂 I've never been able to get my two big ones to make pups but somehow the plant they came from (my moms) keeps making them faster then we can root them or give them away, pry has at least twenty on it🤦‍♀️

Okay.. this is gonna be long, sorry OP.... . so my friend does not own plants, wants to, but every plant she's had, she waters once and forgets. So she asks me and another friend " my coworker has these spider plant babies, do you want one?" I said sure, it's not a plant I've kept before. So weeks go by right.. and I'm over at her place and I see these 2 little pots with little brown sticks inside, just tiny bit of green on top. I look closer and the soil might as well be petrified, it looks like one of those coir circles it's so puckered up!!!! So I go and drench them down. And I'm like "ma'am! Wth??" I took mine home and put it in the kitchen and it has just vaguely been alive since. I feel like it should be grateful and thriving, conconsidering it could still be puckered up on a lightless counter, but no...... she wants to be filled with spite. It's fine... I will continue to care for her. I just moved her to a different south facing window, and she seems a smidge happier.

😂😂😂 this post is hilarious and i feel similarly about my ungrateful silver sword philo.

if it helps, my spider did really well (before i lost it in a fire recently) to the left of a south facing window in a very chunky mix with lots of fine orchid bark and perlite. these grow natively on the forest floor so they like that debris vibe for media. brown tips are unavoidable, especially in south facing. if i get another one, i’ll hang it in a east facing window. don’t let it dry all the way out.

Thats funny😂 i get so annoyed when I rescue a plant and it is ungrateful and doesn't do well...my alocasia currently being an example of this😏

I also wait until they look like a mini spider plant! They usually have very clearly visible nodes by then and are easy to propagate in water. Mine produces pups all the time but has never flowered.

I normally wait until it looks like a mini spider plant with 4-5 leaves that are at least 2" long. You can see in the picture with the plant momma pot that the pup is ready to come off.

Then I pop it in water (usually with a little rooting powder or a pothos cutting). Once it looks like the second picture, with roots and secondary roots, I'll put it into soil.

you don’t have to wait until it’s \*quite\* this big, but you can see it has roots. those roots are what you’re waiting for. then you can just pop them into soil (or water prop if that’s your vibe, but these spread in nature by creeping along the forest floor on these runners)
