# First winter as a plant parent, so my questions are a bit subjective…

First winter as a plant parent, so my questions are a bit subjective seeing as I have several different types of plants. What are the most common problems you (those who live in areas that get COLD) encounter during winter?

I can’t tell if signs on my plants are normal. How much leaf drop is concerning? Why is my lucky bamboo slowly yellowing from the top no matter what I do? Are leaves growing in small because of the temperature? Can ANY of my plants survive in my window light alone?? Because it’s been super dark lately! Which plants do you guys have to just leave mostly-alone now or else you’ll go crazy watching every tiny thing?

Help and general advice appreciated. Thank you for coming to my TedTantrum.

When the heat comes on, I need to bring out the humidifiers. I have two running 24 hours a day. I try to maintain over 50% humidity level. They are room size humidifiers. I may still have a problem with my calatheas and begonias getting slightly crispy edges on a few leaves.
I also increase the length my grow lights are on. Only other change is that some of my succulents go dormant and require a lot less water. But Planta does pretty good with adjusting the watering schedule.

I’ve got pebble trays, misting, and a room humidifier running all the time. I still can’t seem to get over 30%, 35% if I’m really lucky.

My house humidity is usually in the 20’s for comparison. Misting is pretty much useless, and pebble trays only provide a small amount of humidity in an extremely small area. The larger of mine puts out 2 gallons a day and smaller 1 gallon a day. It depends on room set up too. Opposite side from my tropicals are succulents and that part of room is in the 30’s for humidity.

My winter setup is just one grow bulb and making sure it stays on long enough. Some of my tropical species get a wet season/dry season, so they switch to dry season and less frequent watering in winter

Do the tropical look any different in the dry season? I.e. do they get crispy and drop leaves but then recover fine in the wet?

Most of them look the same year-round. My dendrobiums are supposed to drop leaves over winter but only one of the three has dropped any. Some species will drop leaves and do a dormancy if they get cold enough to trigger it, but mine are kept warm enough to not do that. Some do a rest period where they look the same but don't do any growth for the dry season
