# Hi everyone, a couple of days ago. I put a post about my peperomia…

Hi everyone, a couple of days ago. I put a post about my peperomia Hope. And noticed that my leaves were wrinkly looking and very soft. It was previously in a terra-cotta 5 inch pot. I’ve taken it out of the pot to see how the roots are. There are hardly any roots on my peperomia! YIKES. I’ve been very consistent with watering and light. But now how do I get more root growth? Or what do I do?

Succulent/cactus mix and Maybe try one or two strands in water.

I was thinking that for sure. And maybe even some in perlite? To see if the roots would grow better in that too what do you think of that idea?

it looks and sounds like your plant may have root rot. i would chop and prop to give it the best chance of surviving and growing new healthy roots. reasoning being that sections of stem nearer the soil could already be infected and unsalvageable, and longer stems tend to struggle to root when compared to smaller cuttings. i usually keep one or two nodes per piece. i would toss any mushy pieces and propagate the rest, after allowing them to callous, in perlite or your preferred propagating medium.

Wow, that is interesting! I wonder how it had gotten root rot? Because I’ve had it for at least two years and have been diligent with watering light and fertilizing. I noticed a couple weeks ago that the leaves were a little soft and they looked a little wrinkly when you squeeze them. And it was definitely getting in between each group of clusters. I haven’t chopped the roots off or anything, but I took it out of the old pot, as you can see from the picture and I’ve washed off any of the dirt debris and I’ve put it in with coco coir. do you think I should’ve just cut off the roots altogether? Because they didn’t look bad for the minimal roots that were left. I actually do have some propagations going when I cut the plant from being so long. Thank you definitely for the info.

Two years and no roots!?! 🤯

What’s so weird is I don’t think that I had a problem until the past couple of months. Because it was thriving and it was growing. You can definitely see how long it was.

it’s the only thing i could think of, considering how few roots there are compared to foliage and how quickly it declined. these plants are prone to a calcium deficiency and i think yours may be affected considering its curled leaves. peperomia ‘hope’ has thick and fleshy, coin-shaped leaves when it’s healthy. it’s possible the deficiency got to a point where it killed off the roots to keep growing, but that’s just a guess.
