# Hi all! I have many plants in water, some are propagations and some…

Hi all!
I have many plants in water, some are propagations and some are in water indefinitely. But among all of them these 2 seem to build up algae. I generally just top them up with water (sometimes with fertiliser) and occasionally I’ll do a full water change and clean the jar. Just wondering if this algae is beneficial or should I keep cleaning it out when it builds up? They both seem to be happy and are pushing out new leaves. Thanks!!

So the algae build up is caused by light hitting the water. It’s possible these two are getting just a bit more light than the others… even if in the same area. It’s perfectly natural and helps provide oxygen as long as it’s kept under control the way you have been. OR, you can switch to a blacked out jar. No you wouldn’t see the root growth, but roots don’t grow in the sun they grow under ground so that’s ok. It’s honestly up to you entirely.

Eehhh I don't usually make a big to do about algae in my water props. You can use a few drops of peroxide to kill it. If left to over grow it will compete for nutrients. But generally isn't harmful

Paint the glass with nail polish. If you remove the light from where the water is, you won’t have algae. You can also paint it a clear green and the algae will think it’s in the dark but you can still see it (algae is green. You see green because algae REFLECTS green. If you only give it green light, it’ll only be able to reflect and can’t absorb.)
