Hey Sharon, just some tips I hope can help you with that massive monstera:

• The Pot: Grab a heavy duty pot (think ceramic or terracotta) that is 2 to 3 inches wider than the old one. Make sure it has great drainage holes so the roots don't drown. A heavy pot keeps a massive Monstera from pulling a faceplant.

• The Dirt: Go for a chunky mix that doesn't hold too much water. Mixing regular potting soil with a bunch of perlite and orchid bark is the golden ticket.

• The Backbone: Since this beast is huge, now is the ultimate time to jam a sturdy moss pole or wooden stake in there to help it climb.

• Call a Buddy: Seriously, a plant this size is a two person job unless you want a wrestling match.

• Bundle the Leaves: Gently corral the big stems and loosely tie them together with twine or soft plant tape. It keeps them out of your face and stops them from snapping.

• The Slide: Lay the pot on its side on a tarp or old sheet. Tap the sides of the container to loosen things up, then slide the pot off the plant instead of yanking the stems.

• Loosen 'Em Up: Give the root ball a gentle massage to break up that tight, cramped shape.

• Tuck the Air Roots: Those crazy long roots growing out in the open? Just tuck them right into the new pot with the rest of the roots. They'll adjust to life underground and help keep this giant steady.

• Base Layer: Drop a few inches of your fresh dirt mix into the bottom of the new pot.

• Drop it In: Set the plant and your moss pole right in the middle. You want the top of the root ball sitting about an inch below the rim.

• Fill it Out: Pack the fresh soil into the empty spaces around the sides. Give it a gentle press to get rid of big air gaps, but don't stomp it down.

• Drench It: Give it a massive drink until water runs out the bottom. This helps the new dirt settle around the roots.

• Chilled Vibes: Put it right back in its favorite spot with bright, indirect light. Don't feed it any fertilizer for at least a month or two while it recovers from the move.

Thank you for the helpful tips!! You’re right about the buddy system…might need about 3 volunteers.

The only thing I’d edit from my personal experience is to go up 4-6 inches in pot size. Now that my baby is big, i try to make it that i only have to repot once a year.

When it comes to soil, chunky is great to prevent root rot, but I don’t want to water my plant weekly. I used less bark and perlite this time and now I only have to water every week and a half or so.

Don’t mess with the roots. Add a soil layer to the bottom of the old pot, pick her up out of the old pot, plop her down in the new pot and fill the gaps. Like mentioned before, pack that soil to fill as many gaps as possible. Water her and put her back where she was.

Lastly, this is probably a two man job, but I’ve done it myself for the past three years solo cuz I had a good strategy. I laid the plant down over a repotting mat to minimize mess. Then I shimmy the plant gently out of the old pot, pushing down in the sides to help the process (think Plants By Krystal and/The People’s Elbow). I get the soil down in the new pot and then pick up the plant to plop her down. All my supplies are close for ease. I also turn the fan off cuz I’ve beheaded a few babies by missing that step, lol.

Best of luck!
